Spotted this Gazelle bicycle and it is the first one I have ever seen in my little town. Maybe it's been here for years and I only happened to see it just yesterday.
What kind of wine crate do you have on the FRONT of your bicycle? Where did you get it? Who makes them and can I buy one? This is a series of questions I get every then and again.
So for those readers who wanted to know -- another DIY is revealed!
As you can see (below) the crate is a recycled CD or compact disc holder. Once these were a very popular way to keep and display your CD collection. Note: I found mine at yard sales.
I adore the "Napa Valley..." logo on the crate -- and that is precisely why it is often perceived as some sort of wine box. However I wasn't so crazy about the "Compact Disc Digital Audio" logo so I sanded it off -- you can compare the finished crate photo above to the one pictured below, the crate below has NOT been sanded yet.
Nestled within the crate is another rattan basket that fits snugly inside...
Lastly the means of attaching the crate to the handle bars is quite straight forward. I used straps that came with the buckles already on and I purchased them from my local leather works supply shop. You can make your own buckle straps if you want too. That is if you are willing to do a little leather working 101, requiring basic skill sets and tools to make them.
I additionally reinforced the centered positioning of the crate by wrapping some lacing around the bicycle stem and handlebars for extra stability.
This front bicycle crate is small enough so as not to require any additional support utilizing a bicycle porteur front rack. Added bonus is that I can remove the crate without too much bother. I find it a perfect size and fit with my bicycle handlebars. Best of all my little bicycle 'wine' crate offers a nice, handy place to store items I want quick and easy access to!
In all there are now three videos of The Madrid Tweed Ride, this one being the latest one to premier. Quite a lot of work went into this one, so if you really want a full experience of what the day was like this one will surely make you feel like you were there.
Besides collecting vintage bicycles I have three vintage bicycle posters from of the turn of the century, depicting women and bicycles (bicycles from long forgotten bicycle makers…). You’ve probably have seen these before somewhere. My posters were reissued in the 1970s. They are faded and worn and I love them.
I have this well preserved newspaper from 1922, French and entitled “Le Petit Echo de la Mode”. Apparently Fashionable Cycling Attire has been making the front page for quite sometime. It’s why I had to have it when it came up for auction! Once in awhile I take it out, look over it’s pages and enjoy a cup of tea as you can tell by this iphoneography snap shot -- which inspired today’s post.
And then is my Sgt. Pepper (to me) looking fella on a Tweed Ride! It is from Toronto Artist Janet Bike Girl. It’s of course not vintage, but I thought it looked rather well with the others.
Enjoy!
FYI: all photos are instagram photos and on my instagram feed

A very Merry (and Red) Christmas Poinsettia in my front bicycle crate to start things off with!
A while ago I did a postDIY - Attach a Wine Crate to Your Bicycle Rack.Since then I have collected lots of various wine crates, wine boxes, slated style crates of all sizes and woods types. I like to switch it up a bit -- never wishing to permanently bolt one particular crate to my back bicycle rack.
In this example I decided to use very thick leather latigo strips to attach (cinch) my crate. I was going for a more natural earthly look...
The crate pictured here is one I found at the thrift store. I believe it to be a gardeners caddy. The handles are turned down. With the handles turned down it provides a convenient way to support simple cloth canvas tote bags -- voilĂ a simple pannier.
For some time now I have been collecting vintage wine crates, plus collecting wine boxes from local vintners like say-- a spiffy Bonny Doon wine box . The problem I have is this. I'm not sure I want to go drilling holes in some of the nicer vintage and collectible ones in my collection. There are a couple I'm willing to sacrifice, so we shall see.
In this next version the vintage beverage box crate is bolted on the back rack...
The crate is attached to the bamboo bicycle in the foreground. The bamboo bicycle was rather nice in and of itself! I like how a beverage crate was used - Par-T-Pak. Sounds like a party to me!
It is all WildCrafted - made by this fairy sprite of a girl who goes out into nature to hand collect everything herself. I can't tell you how wonderful it smells, the colors are so subtle and beautiful too. Not at all the typical Christmas wreath in dark evergreens with red berries and bows.
Otherwise today was all about the Post Office and mailing out packages. AND I was so happy to transport my new wreath home safely on my DIY back rack porteur. (BTW the DIY post is forthcoming sooner or later!)
Oh, if you'd like a wreath like the one I have they are available.

Early, early this morning I made my way to the big empty parking lot to get in some practice riding fixed (yes, despite today's wild howling winds and the resultant annoying allergy attacks!) --Usually the parking lot is a filled to the max with summer tourist cars. Now it's my own private practice track.Thankfully.
I don't know why I am so keen on learning to ride fixed. Maybe one day I will get good enough to actually ride in the streets. Oddly this T-shirt gives me a silly confidence boost AND it reminds me to make time for fun.
80s Felix the Cat T-shirt -- vintage (more 80's iconic nerd shirts) Acid Washed skinny jeans -- no label Italian Linen Jacket -- G. Marciano? A few weeks ago I took a few photos while at the San Francisco Bike Expo -- only now am I getting around to sharing it. This is my favorite one, something about the retro euro feel of the jersey he's wearing. I believe it was vintage.
The start of the Run captured on video and posted just moments ago...
Don't you love it! It's only begun -- people are still on their bicycles riding - tea stop, prizes, parties and more still await everyone as the day progresses. There is sure to be mucho, many more videos, along with top notch, fine photography work documenting today's event. You'd expect that to happen coming from the birthplace of the original first Tweed Run that began it all...
Despite the rain bursts out of nowhere I managed to stay very cozy and dry - and I owe it to my my vintage tweed cape. My bicycle is another story. Rain and my vintage DL-1 Raleigh do not fare so well together. It is because of the rod brakes - they don't handle safely. This equals to a Mad Dash and jumping over rain puddles.
This outfit would be so ideal for a Tweed Run -- Is anyone still looking for inspiration to put something together for one of the remaining Tweed Rides or Runs coming up this weekend? This outfit was rather unexpected, but worked perfectly for me!
I still have more tweed outfits I am hoping to share, I'm Tweed obsessed I guess!
p.s. Hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving everyone!
