Gaby Basora REALLY Likes Riding her Bicycle – nymag

According to this recent interview in NYMag, Gaby Basora really does like her bicycle!

Below are snippets from that interview. I found them so worth sharing with you…

"…I like to find obscure little vintage stores and antique shops. I do a lot of exploring — I ride my bike pretty much everywhere and pop into random stores."

"… I ride my bike a lot, and I end up in pants more often than I wish — the long skirts tend to get caught in my wheel."

What's something you never leave the house without? --- "My bicycle — I pretty much ride year-round. I lived in Amsterdam when I was younger, and you develop this complete resiliency to ride straight into the wind."

Now I'm off to find a photo of Gaby and her bicycle. Hmmh, I wonder what she rides?

p.s. Gaby will be the next quest designer for Target. ---And will Gaby ever consider getting a skirt guard put on her bicycle!?

Sage and her Bicycle Trip- Part II

Sage’s first destination via bicycle was...

just outside of Salem OR - it was to attend a Primitive Skills Workshop - she was there a week. I didn't think to ask Sage just what a Primitive Skills Workshop might entail, though I had an idea. How brilliant I thought. That could certainly come in handy for a bike road trip.

From the photos (and the previous video) you can see how Sage outfitted her bike. I didn't go into detail asking about what she packed. Maybe some day Sage will write or blog about her stories. To that end she did say she kept a journal.

In her journal she said she periodically chronicled stuff- mundane stuff like directions, maps plus jotted down miscellaneous notes - and then her more personal musings and drawings too.

Some people she met along the way she said, would ask incredulously if she were traveling solo - even accused her of being too young and openly wondered if she were a runaway. All and all most people were encouraging though and she smiled.

I asked about her plans while she is in Santa Cruz. She said she loves bicycles and would love to work as a bike mechanic. It's a skill she's honed in on I imagine. Very useful for a long solo bike trip of 1000 miles.

Sage's Bike Trip...Bellingham to Santa Cruz

A few days ago I met Sage.

We talked a bit about her experiences on the road. There is more to her story. I will be writing soon and posting a continuation of Sage's story along with a few more photos.

I also have her phone number - so if there are any questions for Sage let me know. This could become an interactive interview depending on what you want to ask Sage. I for one think she should start a blog and share her travel journal...

As for how this movie came to exist - Well, I got the idea to use my iphone 4G/imovie app and record a tiny bit of our conversation. I'd never used my iphone this way before, never made a video before in my life for that matter! Thankfully I did figure it out. ALL of it, 100% was done on my iphone including uploading it to YouTube.

*See here, here and here for more stories of of ladies traveling the road via bicycle

p.s. Yes, there is a surprising reference to Eat, Pray and Love in Sage's video.

Riding Your Bicycle To the Sea

Riding your bicycle to the sea - can anything seem more lovely?

Bicycle by the Sea shared by ridingpretty

When I think of all the plethora of images of girls and their bicycles, I smile. I have featured a good many such romanticized images here on RidingPretty, as you may well have discerned by now. Yes, I really like the beautifully romantic ones like this one I am sharing with you today. I get so very much inspired!

It wasn’t always so easy to find the romantic photo of a girl and her bicycle, say for instance a photo showing her on a picnic outing or riding on a country road. What I’ve discovered - starting with the fashion, then the lifestyle commercial photographers, is that this niche genre of photo started popping up a little, then more and then way more! When there is a good thing - it gets widely emulated, and well it should! Photographers are staging shoots with girls and their bicycles in the country side, on picnics (lots of picnic baskets spread out on picnic blankets). Lots of beautifully captured moments – happily frolicking moments, looking reflective moments, sharing looks between girlfriends moments. Oh, and girls with balloons on their bicycles, lots of balloons on bicycle. Romanticized bicycle images are showing up everywhere!

Seems like everyone’s got a good idea for a girl and her bicycle shot! Tumblr is the “goto” for tons of photos of girls with bicycles. Just about every image every published on the web ends up on somebody’s Tumblr page. Added into the mix now are all of the beautiful self captured moments of (all the newer/newish) bicycle bloggers doing their own photo shares. All their (maybe even your) romantically themed photos eventually end up on these Tumblr pages... I am politely guessing?

It’s all fun. If I weren’t so lazy this summer I’d have been off capturing more shots of my own idealized, perfect bicycle picnic outing. Hey, that’s not such a bad idea.

Summer is almost over...
Hope this vintage photo inspires you to go on another picnic or two before summer is over.
Beautiful Schwinn bicycle! - it's a road bike circa 1969--

"In the bicycle boom that began in 1969, Schwinn worked hard to spread it's popularity... Adults could ride without sacrificing comfort or anything else that went into having a good time, while gas guzzling autos were for dinosaurs. "

Bicycles and Street Fashion Chic -- ELLE

ELLE Bicycle Street Style shared by ridingpretty

ELLE Bicycle Street Style shared by ridingpretty

You've probably seen lots of street style photos here are on RidingPretty that I’ve either shot myself (see the side bar- street shots) or the ones I’ve shared with you from some of the greats like The Sartorialist. So enjoy this newest share...

These shots today are from ELLE and the wonderful eye of Mr. Newton in a piece called Street Chic – Easy Riding. There are fifteen shots in all, one more fantastic than the next. All the girls have these great summer outfits on, so there is plenty of “what to wear”, bicycle style tips to be picked up by perusing the photos. So no more excuses, or whining about what to wear in sweltering summer heat. These girls are doing it!

Looking through these photos I was struck with how many bicycle had baskets - twelve bicycles with baskets out of the fifteen! What this says to me - the bicycle is not just the newest "must have" fashion accessory as many have tried to claim. Look at all the stuff being loaded and transported into those baskets. I didn’t see a single pannier though - I suppose that will be the next.
