The Heron and The Heron

The Heron and The Heron....

(My DL-1 Raleigh vintage bicycle)

Until I can purchase a proper upright commuter bike like the very popular Batavus... (You know THE ‘must have’ bicycle as ridden by several of the cycle chic cognoscenti), well until then I ride my beloved 'PrettyBritty'. I've never seen another ladies 1960's Raleigh step through like mine around town. And by around town I mean Berkeley, San Francisco and now Santa Cruz my latest hometown. My bicycle is unique and a head turner, and so very recognizable. The artisanal helmet cover prototypes which I am always testing out always get heads turning as well!

I am a lollygag rider. I have no bike to work commute to speak of. I mainly work out of my home studio. Occasionally I work with a hi-tech start-up. Either way I have an indecently short bike to work commute.

So where do I go when I do ride my bike? I go for leisure rides to enjoy the beauty of the place I live in. I go downtown to partake in my favorite activity which is to frequent the excellent thrift stores in pursuit of recyclables for use in the making of my helmet covers. I also primarily dress from vintage and thrift store finds so I’m always on the hunt for a new vintage frock to wear! I go downtown to shop the art stores for supplies, downtown for café outings, downtown for Farmer’s Market, and so forth.

I am still in recovery from the ‘nervous nellies’ after several close encounters with near death while city bicycle riding some years back, PLUS caring for a friend after a head injury sustained from a bike accident with a car. So to cope, I began to seek out walk-able and bike friendly communities as a priority as to where I would be living ultimately. Now when planning all of my bicycle routes, what I do is to take the LONG way. I chose the quiet back roads. Here in Santa Cruz there are beautiful dedicated bicycle path ways. That’s what I am sharing with you in the pictures you’re seeing today. The bicycle path you see in the photo goes along the San Lorenzo River. It takes you downtown, though from the photo you'd never guess you were a just few short blocks away from the heart of downtown!

*****
Update: An anon reader over at Thom's Old Bike Blog suspected my bicycle was circa 1970's.

Anon...I bumbled back here and found your comment last night. Becoming OCD driven I researched and researched. Oh my gosh, you're right!

I purchased this bike off SFCraigslist. In the ad it was advertised & listed as circa 1968. I totally trusted the previous owner's word...he worked his entire life in bike shops and had a major collection of various bikes going back 30 plus years. He himself bought the bike from American Cyclery in SF in the early 90's, at least that's what he said anyway.

So What is the telltale identifier? It's the Raleigh lettering. Slanted (like what's on my bicycle) means it's from the 1970's and later and upright lettering means it's from the 1960's or earlier. So there you have it.

For about 2 hours I was really upset and thought about recontacting the person I bought it from. I decided against it. I like my bicycle, so that's that.

Thom... I guess if you want you can change the title of this post to reflect the correct age of this bicycle.

Beautiful Bicycle Shop on Wheels

Street selling via a most beautiful and creative Bicycle Shop!

Bicycle Feather Jewelry Shop on the Street by RidingPretty

This bicycle vendor's shop consists of a DIY bicycle child trailer all redone in tapestry fabric. It converts into a table display for her wares. I especially love the touch of a vase of wild flowers on the table top.

RedWingBlackBird is the name this talented artisan goes by. You can find her on occasion downtown Santa Cruz. Her art and craft is making jewelery and feathered hair jewelry extensions. She pedals her portable shop downtown, sets up and is usually quickly surrounded by admirers of her work. Last year her feathered hair pieces were largely ignored by people passing by her bicycle shop, this year it's quite the opposite!

More street seller vendors setting up mobile shops with their bicycles (**hint renegade foodies twitter their locale) :

Bike Basket Pies (no longer in biz but very missed)
Magic Curry Kart
Holly Tamales
Biscuit Bike
Sabertooth Bakery (via Chic Cyclist)

Selling from a bicycle, doesn't always sit well with localities that have permits and license requirements in order to sell -- being mobile on your bicycle is one way to stay, well mobile...

Have you noticed any entrepreneurial bicycle vendors popping up in your neighborhood?

View of my World - Bicycle Path

 by ridingpretty

Where I've chosen to live is highly walkable and ride-able. So many times I opt to walk instead of riding my bicycle - it all depends...

by ridingpretty

Everyday this is the view I see from my writing desk window. It overlooks a bicycle path. I see bicyclists (along with walkers) on the path all day long - first thing in the morning - last thing at night.

I marked up the top photo. If you click on it you can see it tremendously enlarged. The first bridge takes me in the direction to my favorite coffee house Caffe Pergolesi that I've mentioned before.

The second bridge takes me to the heart of downtown. It literally drops me off at TJ's plus caty corner is my favorite thrift store. Of course downtown (with lots of links/posts to look at) has my favorite movie theaters, all kinds of shopping and cafes & restaurants galore.

The third bridge (which you cannot see in the photo) takes me to the Post Office and other favorite thrift stores, bookstores, the library and more favorite cafes.

The fourth bridge (which you also cannot see in the photo) takes me to a area where I can go shopping at several major retailers.

Now go back to the starting point if go I along the path I end up at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk/Beach. Look across other San Lorenzo river and you see another path going along the river as well!

When I look out my window I see a bicycle path! How good is that! Fortunately looking out my window also gives me a heads up on how to dress for the day. Ah, I dream about getting a big high powered camera & lens so I can zoom in on the bicyclists on the path. Now wouldn't that be fun...

Santa Cruz Street Style Bike Photo - Post Office

Ann rides her pink Cruiser bike to the Post Office - Downtown Santa Cruz

On the way to my Post Office I came across Ann - soaking up the warm spring sunshine on her shiny pink cruiser bike. Obviously she already has a healthy sun glow to her skin and it's only just early spring.

Flip flop sandals,
denim cut offs,
tank top,
baseball cap,
and tribal woven bag (barely visible)

All makes for super, simple California Chic.

Fantastic Bamboo Bicycle

Downtown Los Gatos - Summer California Cycle Chic Girls and one amazing bamboo bicycle ...

Very warm day today, sun was blaring down hard. I squinted my eyes at just what kind of bicycle was ahead?

It was this very pretty bamboo bicycle I soon discovered! The owner told me she loved her bicycle but because it was bamboo it required dedicated upkeep to keep it looking good and at it's best. But then again she loved her bicycle!

Oh, and that's her friend waiting sweetly and patiently as I tried to quickly snap photos before the traffic light changed again...

p.s hope you can see/notice - 1) the beautiful flowers in the basket, 2) the pretty cornflower blue shade of nail polish on her fingernails and 3) the best wicker weaved bicycle seat I have ever seen!

bike to work day - what I wore by ridingpretty

I had a great morning at the downtown Santa Cruz energizer station on Bike To Work Day before I headed up to SF for the Bike to Work Day goings on in the City.

So anyway here's to keeping up with 'what I wore' type
photo documenting. Here's my last year's. While looking for more 'what I wore' kinds of fashion looks I came across this Nora Ephron - Off Broadway play NYC... I'm laughing already :)

Hope everyone is having a FABulous Weekend!!!

p.s. anyone else have any Bike to Work Day - 'what I wore' photos to link to?

Red Cruiser Bicycle - Downtown

December, winter light. This photo was taken just before we got our current cold snap. It was still 'just wear a sweater and you'll be fine' kind of day.
What I like is the festive touches of red in her dress ( her red bicycle!) and the mixed patterns. Seems to me as the Holidays approach it gets easier and easier to wear head to toe red and green... just be like an elf, some mistle toe, or a brightly sprinkled sugar cookie.

Eva Mendes with Bicycle --- Fashion and the Bicycle Live ON!

Eva mendez and Bicycle shared by ridingpretty
(via iiiiiiii)

My, Eva Mendez looks AMAZING! This photo is so dreamy. A few days ago.... Indian Summer and all the girls downtown were wearing flitty little dresses like Eva's. Today the wind was blowing 60 miles per hour with a definite bitter bite of cold in the air. Enough of the weather report and now back to enjoying this stellar photo of Eva!

Grocery Shopping by Bicycle - HOT Orange Reflective Bike Vest - Nice Panniers !

grocery shopping by bicycle via ridingpretty

Just a few days ago I couldn't help but stop in my tracks! Wow! That HOT orange bike vest is worn to the best effect...you see, I am altogether NOT a huge fan of bike reflective vests but the way she wears it!! That muster colored sweater dress, the biker jacket and boots, and that little shoulder bag!

I caught her just as she was going in to grocery shop at our downtown TJs. Check out her big panniers. She was up for a LOT of shopping.

A little secret. The bike rack both in front and at the back entrance is always busy with 'bicycle grocery shoppers'. You could set up there with a camera and shoot to your hearts content. I love my community ♥

Metallic Stripes Dress - Vintage Raleigh Bicycle with Wine Basket

(photos by RidingPretty)

Straight away I noticed the Raleigh bicycle with that back wicker basket ideal for transporting two bottles of wine with an extra compartment for food and flowers. I couldn't help but wonder who the rider might be?

Off I went on my next errand. A few minutes later voila!... the rider and I conveniently convened at the intersection. She'd borrowed this 1970's Raleigh bicycle and 'yes, isn't the wicker basket on the back just the best!'... It was filled with (mail?) manila envelopes and other purchases, no wine bottles just yet. AND her dress with it's metallic flecks had the best sparkly effect as she rode through the streets. Her fab green bag in the front basket was so color complimentary to her Raleigh as well. (I just wish my camera had captured the sparkly dress a bit better for your viewing pleasure... sigh ..)

This is number four of the four stylish riders I spotted on (hot) Friday, and all in less than one hour, all downtown Santa Cruz. The temperature was in the 90's.

p.s I've shared the photos of the other stylish riders from (hot) Friday, one each day. This was the last one. Very good day for stylish riders, don't you think!

Checkered Dress -- Red Diamond Frame Bicycle

(photos by RidingPretty)

(photos by RidingPretty)

She rides a diamond frame bike in a dress ( really cute checkered dress BTW) with no problem! I know some out there wonder if this is an easy thing or not?...meaning how do you get on and off a bike with a top bar while wearing a dress? I see so many girls handle this effortlessly... so it never occurred to me to ponder over this. However for a 1st person report on the art of mounting/dismounting a diamond frame bike visit Lovely Bicycle as she goes into detail about her experience. Also visit Chic Cyclist, the bicycle she rides très chic around Boston is a gorgeous vintage Dawes ( a boys bike geometry or diamond frame.)

Pencil Skirt Sarong on a Bicycle

The skirt she has on is like a pencil style skirt. It was in a lovely, batikish print, very sarong like. The skirt fell to her ankles but once she was on her bicycle she gracefully maneuvered it so that the back split opened up giving her plenty of room to ride. I completed her on this fete. She said, 'oh this skirt is nothing, you should see the stilettos I wear at night on my bike.'

This is number two of the four stylish riders I spotted on (hot) Friday, and all in less than one hour, all downtown Santa Cruz. The temperature was in the 90's.
