So excited…going to the Renegade Craft Fair this weekend in San Francisco. It got me in a very DIY, crafty mood....

Here’s a round-up of some of my favorite DIYs. Let’s get crafty this summer!

Over at Bust magazine there was a great ‘pimp your ride’ DIY. Sara originally posted this in her 12 Bicycles for Girls. I covered it here as well. ***I highly recommend the pattern for the making the bicycle seat cover*** …If you want the DIY instruction .pdf, well then just email me for it. Bust Magazine and Sara sent it along and are happy for me to distribute the .pdf out to you. shelly@ridingpretty.com

Sweet Little Vintage & DIY Basket

Love this sweet vintage bicycle. I first spotted it on craigslist for sale. A few days later I happened upon the very same bicycle and sporting a nice little basket. Yep. I checked, this bicycle had found a new home.

Carrying on with the DIY basket theme, here is another one... it's nice, big and roomy.

This one is really a good DIY for a making a complete bicycle basket. It is not just a simple liner for a pre-existing bicycle basket... it is an actual bicycle basket in and of it's self!

This DIY tutorial comes from A Lemon Squeezy Home. It is just so perfect, especially now with spring and all the flowers waiting to be bicycled home. Go to the DIY.

Hmmm. I think I'll make mine in a plaid or a tweed fabric with some flower rosettes...

Front Crate on Bicycle - DIY Revealed

What kind of wine crate do you have on the FRONT of your bicycle? Where did you get it? Who makes them and can I buy one? This is a series of questions I get every then and again.

So for those readers who wanted to know -- another DIY is revealed!

As you can see (below) the crate is a recycled CD or compact disc holder. Once these were a very popular way to keep and display your CD collection. Note: I found mine at yard sales.

I adore the "Napa Valley..." logo on the crate -- and that is precisely why it is often perceived as some sort of wine box. However I wasn't so crazy about the "Compact Disc Digital Audio" logo so I sanded it off -- you can compare the finished crate photo above to the one pictured below, the crate below has NOT been sanded yet.

Nestled within the crate is another rattan basket that fits snugly inside...

Lastly the means of attaching the crate to the handle bars is quite straight forward. I used straps that came with the buckles already on and I purchased them from my local leather works supply shop. You can make your own buckle straps if you want too. That is if you are willing to do a little leather working 101, requiring basic skill sets and tools to make them.

I additionally reinforced the centered positioning of the crate by wrapping some lacing around the
bicycle stem and handlebars for extra stability.

This front bicycle crate is small enough so as not to require any additional support utilizing a bicycle porteur front rack. Added bonus is that I can remove the crate without too much bother. I find it a perfect size and fit with my bicycle handlebars. Best of all my little bicycle 'wine' crate offers a nice, handy place to store items I want quick and easy access to!

Hope you enjoyed the DIY!

Essence of Fall

Admittedly my love of capes continues on into this year- though with more of an Indian motif or serape feel.

I included the closeup (of my most current favorite shoes) - Frankly, hopefully you won't let any serape fringe get caught in your bicycle spokes! I always make sure to wrap it up around me when I bicycle...but for these photos I took liberty and let my serape cape drape down.

All most everything has been thrifted (including my serape, bicycle market basket, white top, military jacket, black strawberry necklace) the exceptions being the clogs and cuffed jeggings. On the front of my bicycle is my DIY (thrifted) wine style crate - I did this instead of using the traditional wicker basket.

Here's to Enjoying your own Fall Essence!

Wicker Basket Ingenuity - DIY

A little ingenuity goes a long way. What we have here is a wicker basket elegantly, artistically attached to the bicycle handlebars - held with a little tan belt and two leather thongs ties. Simple.

Beautiful Bicycle Shop on Wheels

Street selling via a most beautiful and creative Bicycle Shop!

Bicycle Feather Jewelry Shop on the Street by RidingPretty

This bicycle vendor's shop consists of a DIY bicycle child trailer all redone in tapestry fabric. It converts into a table display for her wares. I especially love the touch of a vase of wild flowers on the table top.

RedWingBlackBird is the name this talented artisan goes by. You can find her on occasion downtown Santa Cruz. Her art and craft is making jewelery and feathered hair jewelry extensions. She pedals her portable shop downtown, sets up and is usually quickly surrounded by admirers of her work. Last year her feathered hair pieces were largely ignored by people passing by her bicycle shop, this year it's quite the opposite!

More street seller vendors setting up mobile shops with their bicycles (**hint renegade foodies twitter their locale) :

Bike Basket Pies (no longer in biz but very missed)
Magic Curry Kart
Holly Tamales
Biscuit Bike
Sabertooth Bakery (via Chic Cyclist)

Selling from a bicycle, doesn't always sit well with localities that have permits and license requirements in order to sell -- being mobile on your bicycle is one way to stay, well mobile...

Have you noticed any entrepreneurial bicycle vendors popping up in your neighborhood?

Fresh Flowers on Bicycle - DIY (of sorts)

bicycle flower basket by ridingpretty

How wonderful and clever - a way to always have fresh flowers adorn your bicycle!
What it is - a permanently attached flower vase (a steel tube painted white) and affixed to the bicycle basket....

bicycle flower basket by ridingpretty

Here's to Grant, the cool man who rides around with fresh flowers! - flowers reminiscent of these.

He tells me he is planning the "All the FreeKey People Parade" for late August - it's going to be an Art Bicycle Ride, something akin to the Kinetic Art Parade. Grant was one of the organizers on the Kinetic Art Ride, which was spectacular. Funny I still get publishing requests for a photo I took at that ride. Needlessly to say I am excited about the new ride coming up in August! I have weeks to get some arty bicycle concept going. Well, a little off topic - anyone watching "Work of Art"?

Spotted these around town....

I love the inventiveness. Recycle. Use what you've got.

I use a picnic basket myself.
